Arcadia Middle School Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

Arcadia Middle School Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month
Arcadia Middle School 7th-8th grade learned about the many important people and cultures we celebrate during Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15-Oct. 15). With their homeroom teacher, students reflected on their own heritage by filling in on a map the countries their own ancestors are from and bringing in items that represent their own family. This sparked great discussion between students who came from different cultures so they could learn more about their fellow classmates. Also, they were given the opportunity to research important Hispanic people who had global influence, such as scientists, researchers, engineers, actors/actresses, etc. Classrooms also took some time to have a “virtual field trip” to many significant landmarks in Latin America, including Mexico’s Chichén Itzá, Machu Picchu in Peru, and the ancient Mesoamerican city, Teotihuacan Pyramid (Pyramids of the Sun) of Mexico.

On the final day, we culminated our learning by having a “fiesta grande” with students and staff alike bringing in their favorite Hispanic dishes. We want to thank our families and community members who brought in so much delicious food to share with the students. Many had the opportunity to play the popular game “la loteria” while they were enjoying their snacks and listening to popular Latin American music. It was so great to see all of our students coming together as one to celebrate the important diversity we are fortunate enough to have in Arcadia.
