High School Art Students Win Awards in Madison

High School Art Students Win Awards in Madison

Last Friday, March 22nd Arcadia High School had 4 students make it to the State level with Artwork they created this year. Of the 4  high school works that made it to State 2 of those artists' work received awards at the state level! We arrived in Madison at the East Towne Mall to view the other works of art in the show. After that we attended the awards ceremony in the center of the mall. Our artists received their awards and then we headed off to State Street for a bit to eat. After lunch we went to the capital and walked around and admired the art and architecture within. We then made our final stop at The Madison Museum of Contemporary Art where we saw an amazing exhibit by Federico Uribe: Metamorphosis | Metamorfosis. It was a full day of amazing art and we are so proud of all our Artists!

Marianna Garcia received the Royal Brush award for her Oaxacan inspired ceramic cat. She created this work in her 3D art class in Fall 2023. She sculpted and smoothed the cat, had it bisque fired, then painted with acrylic paint and acrylic paint markers. She came up with her own patterns to create the intricate design and layered the paint and patterns to enhance the details.

Janet Carreon received the WAEA High School award for her chiaroscuro artwork of a kitten playing. She did this on black paper with white charcoal. She focused on the main highlights and with little room for error executed the proportions and values perfectly to create a realistic rendition of the kitten.  She had excellent craftsmanship and worked well with this medium. Janet did such a fantastic job in art this year that 2 of her works were selected to go to the regional art show in West Salem. Both works were created in her Advanced 2D art class this Fall, 2023. The other work that was submitted was too large to meet the qualifications of the show, so we had to take a picture and print out the replica of the abstract painting. However its color and detail did not match the beauty of the actual art piece and was not selected to move to the state level.

Brianna Dominguez artwork also made it to the state level. We submitted her monochromatic non-objective abstract art to compete at the regional level and it too advanced to state. She created this work in her Advanced 2D art class. The original was actually orange and is now serving as the works underpainting. She did a great job creating balance and contracts with this work. Her gradients were smooth and did a fantastic job with her values to create balance with her lines and shapes.
