Principles of Veterinary Science students get hands on learning in the classroom!

Arcadia High School students have the opportunity to dive into a high demand career of Veterinary Science. Ms. Gifford, Principles of Veterinary Science Teacher, challenges students to use advanced technologies and medical treatments to maintain the health of animals in her classroom. To enhance hands-on learning students had the opportunity to dissect a cow's reproductive tract.

Each student had to identify parts of the reproductive system not just on paper but in real life. They got to experience touching each organ and noticing the different hardness or lack of stretch between the two different reproductive organs. One exhibit was from a heifer with her first calf so one uterine horn was firm, the other exhibit was from a cow that had a calf in one uterine horn and the other one was stretched from a previous pregnancy. As a group, they engaged in a discussion about the differences and similarities.

Students in this course learn the standard principles of veterinary medicine and participate in other hands-on laboratory activities including diagnosing diseases, blood work, farm practices, lab animal care, animal grooming and health, and working with local veterinarians.

The School District of Arcadia and the Trempealeau Valley Cooperative 2.0 (TVC) takes pride in exposing students to a variety of career development experiences where they can engage in rigorous, authentic learning experiences that are relevant to their learning needs and future ambitions.
